Chapter Twenty-Two

~

W hen Des had entered Brachia with Mara; they had skirted all the settlements to make sure no one detected Mara. What happened was now up to her. She had a husband and a village to protect her. Keith didn’t feel the need to hide from anyone, and the ride was more comfortable since they took main roads. A day later, they approached a checkpoint.

“Papers, please,” the border guard said.

Keith gathered their identity documents and handed them to the guard. The official looked at Lissa after examining her papers and then did the same to Keith. He stopped when he read Des’s information.

“Desolation Boxster?” the guard asked.

“That is me,” Des said.

“Have you been to Listenwell before?”

“Once,” Des said, “when I entered Brachia. Now I am exiting.”

“And heading where?”

“Okora, of course. I have to meet a friend there.” Des restrained himself from giving Jarkan as his destination. He didn’t see why the information was any of the guard’s business.

“Is there a reason why you wish to know if I’ve been here before?”

The guard looked up at Des. “It is thought that it is the name of Listenwell’s duke. The regent has managed the district and is unlikely willing to give it up.”

The guard laughed. “You are too young to be the man with whom you share a name, even if you both exist.”

Des sighed. “You’ll have to be satisfied with me,” Des said. “If you don’t mind, we will be heading on.”

“I don’t mind,” the guard said.

The guard let them mount, and they were a few steps away from the border when he called Des back. “If you ever run across the other Desolation Boxster, tell him to visit Jacob Stoolage in Parkintown.” He scribbled a note and handed it up to Des, still mounted on Snowflake.

“I will,” Des said as he snapped his horse’s reins and moved smartly forward to catch up to his friends.

“What did the guard want?” Keith said. “I hope you don’t mind us moving ahead. I thought that might increase your chances of him letting you go.”

Des unfolded the paper. “He gave me a name and an address to give to Desolation Boxster. Do you know Jacob Stoolage?” Des said to Keith.

“No Jacob, but I have heard of a woman with Stoolage for a last name. I wouldn’t guess it’s common, but the woman lived north of Listenwell.”

“The address is in Parkintown,” Des said. “I’m handing this to you.” Des gave the scrap of paper to Keith. “If you could do some checking around while I am in Jarkan, I’d appreciate it.”

Keith looked at the paper and handed it back to Des. “I can remember this. You keep the note. I suppose this means you will be returning?”

“Curiosity more than anything else. I still have the deeds and the title, but I don’t have Desolation’s money. I can figure out what to do about that when I don’t have Brother Yvan’s predicament hanging over my head.”

As they rode, Keith told Des stories about his training
